Story: Rustom Film is based on Nanavati case that truly occurred in 1959 in Bombay. Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar) is a patriotic Naval Commander. He happens to kill his wife Cynthia’s (Ileana) ex-boyfriend and businessman Vikram Makhija. The Plot revolves around the legal proceedings seeking answers to whether he murdered in self-defence or is it a cold-blooded one. Sub-plots take a cinematic liberty to give relief from the documentary feel. Patriotism is an additional flavor to it. There is no big mystery to unfold and hence no suspense.

Performances: Akshay Kumar who ensures that the audiences are glued in despite certain distracting elements in the screenplay. His role is complicated and needed a lot of effort to convince the audience that he is morally right. The behaviour and appearance of his character are very crucial to his impact on screen and he gets it absolutely right. Ileana D’cruz’s lack of chemistry with Akshay Kumar is a downer. Esha Gupta, with the swagger and the 60’s look does manage to leave an impact.Pawan Malhotra, who played Lobo,an investigating officer, delivers a fine performance and justifies his screen time.

Production Values : The look and feel of Rustom appealing right from when we saw the trailer. There is attention to detail in the sets and Rustom feels like a delicious film from the era it represents. The First-time director Tinu Suresh Desai does a good job, and the editing between shots is decent. But the length of the film could’ve been chopped further – not at the editing table but at the script level.

Music: There are no songs in the movie that disturb the proceedings. Only two that help one understand the characters and their circumstances better

Final Verdict: Akshay Kumar has truly delivered an award-winning and nuanced performance. Watch the film for him!
