Rasbhari is a Hindi language web series, set in the backdrop of small-town India, in the city of Meerut. A new English teacher arrives at the local school, where a young teenager Nand becomes fascinated with the beautiful English teacher, Shaanu Madam. The boy soon discovers that his new English teacher has a $exy alter-ego named ‘Rasbhari’. Swara Bhaskar plays the role of the English teacher, while Nand is played by young actor Ayushmaan Saxena, of Bombay Talkies fame.
Under the garb of the coming-of-age story of Nand, Rasbhari is a powerful indictment of regressive notions such as patriarchy, suppression of female $exuality, and the ilk. It is a social satire that plays out through the medium of the various characters – the infatuated Nand, the teacher Shaanu Madam, who is compelled to keep her $exuality veiled in order to adhere to societal norms, the slut-shaming people who take the moral high ground when confronted with $exually expressive females, and lots more.
Rasbhari is the seventh series from India in 2020 for Amazon Prime Video, after the Kabir Khan-helmed war drama miniseries The Forgotten Army in January, the black comedy miniseries Afsos from comedian Anirban Dasgupta in February, the second season of comedy-drama Pushpavalli from comedian Sumukhi Suresh in March, the TVF-created comedy-drama Panchayat and the second season of romantic comedy-drama Four More Shots Please! in April, and the Anushka Sharma-produced neo-noir crime thriller Paatal Lok in May. Rasbhari’s addition seems to be a case of Amazon Prime merely ensuring that it has released a new Indian web series every month in 2020.
