Onions costlier than apples now in Karimnagar, Telangana. Usually, common people keep away from apples because of their price. But now, people have to think twice before going near onion vendors since the price has sky-rocketed in the past few days. the Onions costlier than apples While a kg of apple costs Rs 80 in the market, onions are being sold at Rs 90 per kg. There is a 75 percent jump in the price of onion during the last four months. The rise in price is mainly attributed to floods-hit parts of Maharastra from where the crop is brought to Karimnagar and other parts of north Telangana districts.

In July this year, onion was available at Rs 20-25 a kg and this doubled by the last week of August. Since then, it has been gradually increasing and has touched Rs 90 now. While white onions are available at Rs 90, red ones are being sold at Rs 80. Since the local crop is not available this season, onions are being brought from the Maharashtra and Gujarat. Incessant rains in Maharasthra had damaged the crop in Pune, Nasik and Nagpur areas.

On the other hand, taking it as an advantage of this shortfall, traders are creating unnecessary scarcity by blocking the stocks to make money. S Praveen Kumar, a private employee, says they have cut consumption of onion due to the rising prices. Similarly, V Sridhar wants the government to take steps to check the prices. Besides price control measures, it was necessary to put an end to hoarding by traders, he said.
